 Sierra Arden United Church of Christ

Final Moderator’s Note for Sierra Arden, UCC

To the Members and Friends of Sierra Arden, United Church of Christ;

As you all are aware, we are about to embark on a very new chapter in the life of our church, this Easter.

We will Federate together with another community of Christians who share a Reformed Tradition, and share a sense of Progressive Christianity, and Extravagant Welcome.

They contribute their wonderful Pastor, and we from Sierra Arden, contribute our facility.

I know that I, and my family, want this church to survive, grow, and continue to be a welcoming place that embraces all who seek a God who is all-loving, and inclusive. A church where our mind is nourished as much as our soul, and where we can all continue to work to build a just and peaceful world. Also, a church where good music joins thoughtful preaching as cornerstones of our worship experience. Sometimes traditional, and sometimes eclectic; Organ, Piano, Guitar, and.....everything else.

Yet in the midst of this new excitement, I have to remember that it will not all be ‘sweetness and light’. I’m sure there will be moments when a suggestion comes up that catches me by surprise. I’m sure there will be times where I need to bite my tongue, and let things play out. Because if we are going to truly invite new folks into our community, we must be prepared for them to make some suggestions, to have new ideas, and sometimes to feel quite strongly about those ideas.

I’ve already been a little challenged by the process; challenged to look at the church through the eyes of someone visiting for the first time. The Refrigerator outside our fellowship hall, the copy machine which is the very first thing you see when you walk in our office, the unused (until recently) name tag racks. Not challenged in a judgmental way, but just to look at our church, and ask myself if it could be better.

Because I want the church to grow, I’m willing to see it evolve. To ‘be all things new’ means in fact, to be different. I’m willing to withhold my judgment, as we grow, and evolve. I hope each of you will join me in that. We are about to .... Plant the Seed, and Trust the Promise”.
Yours in Christ
John Crouch Moderator, Sierra Arden
